DEFINED BENEFIT PLAN:  This is a lifetime pension. Contributions are mandatory during your employment. Your pension is not based on  your fund balance, but on your tier and specific factors:  

• Years of service, including purchases;
• age at retirement;
• and your final average salary

TIERS MATTER:  You are either a General member or a Safety member. Within each membership is a variety of tiers. Your  membership date will determine the tier you are placed in. Each Tier has a unique benefit structure; Tier I, Tier  II, Tier II PEPRA and Tier III. Log into your Member Portal for more information on your tier and your  membership type. Refer to KCERA’s website or contact our office for more information!  

SERVICE PURCHASES:  Purchasing eligible service can add to your overall service credit and increase your pension. Refer to our  Purchase of Service FAQ on our website or contact our office for more information!  RECIPROCITY:  When moving from one California governmental agency to another within 6 months or less (no overlapping  service), you can “link” your benefits. Refer to KCERA’s website or contact our office for more information!  

LEAVING EMPLOYMENT:  If you leave the County or Special District prior to retirement, you have a variety of options regarding your  funds and service, including deferring your retirement to a later date, establishing reciprocity, or withdrawing  your funds. Refer to KCERA’s website or contact our office for more information!  ELIGIBILITY TO RETIRE:  All members are eligible to retire after obtaining 10 years of eligibility AND reaching a minimum age of 50; or  age 70, regardless of service credit. Refer to your Member Portal for information on when you will be eligible! 

BENEFICIARIES:  There are substantial survivorship benefits available to your named beneficiary. It’s important to keep your  designation current and up to date. Refer to KCERA’s website or contact our office for more information! 

DIVORCE AND YOUR RETIREMENT:  If you have been divorced during your employment, contact KCERA’s Legal team ASAP for important  information regarding community property and how it can affect your pension! legal@kcera.org
